Opening April 2026!

When someone is struggling with a mental health concern, making the decision to get care is a crucial step. At Orlando Health Behavioral Health Hospital in Apopka, Florida, we recognize that taking this step can be intimidating, so we strive to make the admissions process as simple and streamlined as possible.

Admissions Criteria

All decisions for admissions to our Apopka behavioral health hospital are made on a case-by-case basis. We understand that every individual who reaches out to us is dealing with a unique set of circumstances, and we approach each inquiry with the individualized attention it deserves.

We provide care for children and adolescents ages 5-17, adults and senior adults. All care is provided on age-specific units, and the unit a person stays on is assigned at the time of their admission. This structure ensures that every patient is placed in an environment that is developmentally appropriate and clinically suited to their needs, surrounded by peers who are at a similar stage of life.

Our programming is specifically designed for people who are struggling with mental health concerns, including:

  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Co-occurring addictions

Exclusionary Criteria

Our specialized inpatient programs are tailored for individuals who are solely in need of mental healthcare. For that reason, we are unable to provide care for people who have a primary diagnosis of one or more of the following:

  • Medical disorders
  • Neurological disorders, such as dementia
  • Certain neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder
  • Substance use disorders

If a patient is struggling with an addiction in addition to a primary mental health concern, we are able to offer the necessary interventions to meet their needs. Our integrated approach to treating co-occurring conditions ensures that no aspect of a patient’s care is overlooked and that their treatment plan reflects the full complexity of their needs.

Admissions Process

Admissions to our Apopka, Florida, hospital begin with a thorough assessment. Our team uses these assessments to gather information about each patient so that we can determine whether the type and level of care we offer will best meet their needs. These assessments are conducted by trained clinical professionals who approach each evaluation with sensitivity, respect and a genuine commitment to finding the right path forward for every individual.

These assessments cover a variety of background information, including:

  • Previous psychiatric treatment: Understanding a patient’s history with mental healthcare helps our clinical team identify what has worked in the past, what has not and how to build a care plan that is both informed and forward-looking.
  • Current presenting symptoms: A detailed picture of a patient’s current symptoms allows our team to assess the severity and nature of the condition they are struggling with and determine the most appropriate level of care.
  • Medical history: A patient’s physical health can have a significant impact on their mental health and on the treatment approaches that are most appropriate for them. Gathering a thorough medical history allows our team to account for any relevant factors when developing a plan of care.
  • Social history: Understanding a patient’s living situation, relationships, support network and social environment helps our team contextualize their symptoms and identify factors that may support or complicate their therapeutic process.
  • Family history of psychiatric concerns: A family history of mental health conditions can provide important clinical insights and help guide our team’s diagnostic and treatment decisions.

The results of these assessments determine whether a person meets criteria for admission and are used to create an individualized plan of care for the patient if they are admitted to our Apopka hospital. Every treatment plan is tailored to the specific needs, goals and circumstances of the individual and is subject to ongoing review and adjustment throughout the course of their stay to ensure that it continues to reflect their progress and evolving needs.

Patients can arrive at our Apopka hospital as a walk-in, as a referral from another facility or with a member of law enforcement as part of the Baker Act. In addition to the main assessment, patients complete a medical screening that is administered by a registered nurse.

Once the medical doctor has reviewed the results of the assessment and medical screening and approved the patient for admission, the precertification process begins and admission paperwork is completed.

If it is determined that a patient would not benefit from receiving care with us, we provide them with a referral to another provider or with relevant resources.
